Empowered Voices:

Catalyzing development through community empowerment

Bisoboka: Everything is possible!

When you empower a woman, you empower an entire community to work toward prosperity and improved livelihoods. This is exactly what we’ve set out to accomplish. Would you like to join?

Empowered Voices is a non-profit organization established by Kaley Sweeney and Lene Martinsen in 2012.

We are currently working on a series of development projects in five villages in the Mubende district - about a 3 hour drive from Uganda's capital, Kampala. Our main focus now is the women, but our goal is to see the whole community prosper through agricultural growth, savings groups, small businesses, handicraft production, and more. The poverty level in this area is severe but the willingness to learn new things and to work for a better future is high. We believe in the women of Empowered Voices.

Join us as we work alongside the 176 members of Empowered Voices Mubende to make a lasting impact on these communities and beyond. Scroll to the bottom of the page to click on the different projects that might interest you or move to the top and Meet the women :)

Who We Are

Empowered Voices is led by Lene Martinsen and Kaley Sweeney. We are a Norwegian and American duo passionate about identifying the skills and talents of others to inspire them and help them help themselves. After researching and conceptualizing a sustainable development project for the women of Mubende for a course at Harvard University, we traveled to our target community to personally engage and assess communal needs. This trip fully confirmed our mutual goal of addressing some of the developing world’s most pressing needs and served as our own motivation to pursue this project longterm. Both of us aspire to personally witness the fruits of our labors through improved gender equity and health and poverty reduction in Mubende and beyond.

We love meeting and engaging with likeminded individuals and organizations. Whether you want to work with us, partner with us, donate, or just say hello, we welcome you to get in touch!

None of our projects would be possible without the diligent, extraordinary work of Julie Matovu, our local consultant, dear friend, and companion in song. Julie presides over Juls Consults, a consultancy based in Kampala that works to empower communities through agricultural development, group marketing, empowerment workshops and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). Julie has been working with Empowered Voices since 2013 and her contributions have been immeasurably appreciated.
